Praise God Always

“17 Though the fig tree does not blossom, and no fruit is on the vines; though the produce of the olive fails, and the fields yield no food; though the flock is cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls, 18 yet I will rejoice in the LORD; I will exult in the God of my salvation.” Habakkuk 3:17-18; NRSV

These words were a blessing for me as I grieved the lost of my brother, Kenneth, who died over 28 years ago. And I come to these verses often when I need to grieve, when I am having a difficult time or when I just want to feel sorry for myself.

When we rejoice and give God the praise and thank Him during our difficult times; my sense is, that’s when God hears our prayers all the more. Why, because He knows that we have faith in Him and that we will trust Him to help us get through our hard times.

I recently became re-acquainted with a friend of mine who is going through a challenging time. Her challenge will change her future forever. However, she is using this time to reconnect with friends and in the process, praising and thanking God. She embodies the verses above and those written by Paul below. Here are Paul’s words:

4 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God….8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. Phil 4:4-6; 8-9; NRSV

  • Think about a time when you stop to thank and praise God? Was it during a good time in your life or when you were confronted with challenges?
  • What were the outcomes of you praising God?
  • What advice can you give others about praising and thanking God during challenging times; or praising him regardless of the circumstances?

Our Work Never Ceases

God, I am thinking about “retirement.” I am ready to hear “well done my son.” But what I sense from you is my job is not done. I have more to do.

What might that be Lord? What are the costs, the sacrifices? God I am not sure I am ready for more work and sacrifice. I want to rest. I am tired. Okay, if I need to go on; here’s what I need from you.

Help me to get it right this time. Communicate to me clearly; assure me the voice I hear is yours. I speak not only for me, but for the “all of us” that listen for your voice.

Help us to hear your call. Comfort us as we come to understand that what we do for you will never cease; that we are to labor in the vineyard as long as we are breathing.

So God encourage me daily. Send me reminders often of your love. And if you must, gently discipline me when I falter or resist your will. Show me what you would have me do; for “all of us” to do.

We all have a role to play. Let me and all your children not neglect our job. Give us strong shoulders for those who come after us to stand on as we (each generation) continue transforming the world.
========================================================

1. Have you ever thought what you might do when you retire?
2. Even in retirement, God preps us for the next venture. What venture might that be for you?

Dear God, help us to stay awake, pay attention and to listen to our hearts and soul as we wait for our new venture to serve you and humankind in a new and exciting way. Amen.

Have I Lived Too Long

2 How long, O LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not save? 3 Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and conflict bounds. (Habakkuk 1:2-3, NIV).

God have I lived too long? Have I lost the passion to serve, to believe?God have I lived too long? Where’s the love in this world; the love that was read to me in Sunday school? Have I forgotten the lessons of my youth? How you defeated the evil one or have I lost the vision to see past the evils in this world? For all I see is hatred, destruction, selfishness, hurts, tears. Why do we hate and condemn others in your name?

God have I lived too long? I am so uncertain, at this moment, what my cause should be. What do you want me to be, to do?

God have I lived too long? Have I become jaded, have I given up hope? My prayers seemed so shallow. Surely, I am not the only one that feels this way; don’t you see the suffering in this world? Don’t you see the hatred in this world? What must I do; what must we do?

God I have come too far to give up now. Renew my faith; give me that youthful zest to enter into this new battle. Help me to influence and transform others to live out their passions—to change this world. Help me God to learn the lessons of faith; to trust you in all circumstances and to acknowledge that you are still in control.

I know now what prophets of the past have learned; that your justice will come on your terms and that you will change this world as you are changing me one moment, one day at a time.

    1. What steps are you taking to change the world?
    2. What armor of yours (Ephesians 6:10-17) needs to be replaced or added?

Challenge yourself today to look beyond the obvious and to look to God to bring true justice to this world.

God, I Want To Be Like YOU

God, I want to be like you. I don’t want to have flaws, to sin. I want to be perfect, feel perfect; to be like YOU.Paul, the apostle, had a sinful “thorn in his side.” But did that matter to YOU? No. He was human. We all are humans, with all our flaws.

So God, help me get over myself. Help me to fully enjoy and live the human experience; flaws and all. YOU created me, with full knowledge that in my humanness I will sin, not one time, but many times.

I pray God that in the end, my spirit that is having and living this human experience will return to YOU refined and perfect just like YOU. Amen.

Wind and Spirit

“The wind blows where it will, and thou hearest its voice, but knowest not whence it comes and where it goes: thus is every one that is born of the Spirit” (John 3:8, Darby Bible).Often I feel the Spirit as a gentle comforting breeze reminding me that God loves me and is present in my life.

I have also experienced the hurricane; God’s strongest wind—nothing to be afraid of; but something to contemplate. Often I have no clue as to why. “What is it that you want me to pay attention to God?”

I will reflect for days. Have I done something wrong? Are you prepping me for spiritual battle? It is often neither; it is my spirit being overwhelmingly grateful to a loving God.

God’s wind, rather faint, gentle, stormy or forceful as a hurricane, is a mystery. Today it is a faint breeze.

How do I interpret this faint breeze today?

God wants me to have a new understanding of who He is. He is not the God of my youth. Where every prayer would be answered and every circumstance resolved the way I had expected and yes hoped. Today I listen to God in a new way, to put my faith into action as never before; remembering what I learned in my youth, yet acting as the mature adult that God expects me to be. That mature adult who will trust God whatever the outcome – to be faithful, whatever the outcome.

It’s my trust and belief that I can do all things through the God’s Spirit which lives within me and that strengthens me; even when I am not as faithful as I might be.
